I have seen 2 variations of things around the headlights, which raises some questions. My car has a black rubber strip that goes between the headlight & the body, but I have seen other cars that do not have this rubber piece.

Now it looks like if I were to take off the rubber piece, I'm guessing that there would be an unsightly gap around the headlight. But, on the cars without the rubber piece, the gap looks nice & small.

So, the questions are: 1. are all the headlights the same size/shape? 2. are all the cutouts for the headlights in the hood area the same size/shape? 3. why was the rubber piece eliminated?

The headlamp surround seals were eliminated when we redesigned the headlamp openings.The seals were creating some issues,you can and i (have) removed the seals on earlier cars. However, the headlamp will be raised higher then the nose surface area, the lamps must be adjusted lower by adding some shims at the under-side mounting points and then centered properly. The opening is slightly larger then the "non" seal cars, but its difficult to notice when the lamp is centered properly.

Thanks John, that's the info I was looking for. It's very interesting to see that for a car with such low production, there were as many minor variations as there was.

Is there a specific car # which the headlights changed after...?

in the early 100's vin#...it was a sporadic switch but by #140 they were all done with later nosesand rubber seals on headlamps
