2000 Qvale Mangusta

The Qvale Mangusta (http://www.qvaleauto.com), originally known as the deTomaso Bigua, is one of the most unique vehicles ever assembled. The original design came out of a partnership with Carroll Shelby; Alejandro deTomasso, the Ferrari designer; and Giordano Casarini, a noted Maserati designer, during the mid to late 1990’s. When that original partnership broke up, deTomaso and Casarini, joined by noted West Coast car importer and dealer, Kjell Qvale, created a newer version of the Bigua, renaming it after the Mongoose, which is the only animal in the world that could defeat a Cobra (as in Shelby Cobra).
Only produced during the 2000 and 2001 timeframe, every Qvale Mangusta was totally hand-assembled in Modena, Italy, at the former deTomaso factory, under the day-to-day direction of Giordano Casarini and Bruce Qvale, who’s signature is engraved on the center console of this car.
This Qvale Mangusta is numbered 64 out of a total of only 265 ever sold into the US during 2000 and 2001; and is one of only 25 in the world ever produced in a “Mangusta Green Metallic” exterior color (similar to British Racing Green).
The engine is a powerful, double overhead 32-valve Ford/Cobra V-8, rated at 320 bhp at 6000rpm, with a top-end speed of 160mph and 0-60 in the low 5.0 second range. The composite body, compact in length but extremely wide for a two-seat coupe, enabled the big V-8 to be positioned completely behind the front axle, resulting in near perfect front-to-rear weight distribution. The engine is also matched perfectly with an ultra-smooth Borg Warner T-45 5-forward speed transmission, and hefty Brembo four-piston caliper brakes. The folding roof system is also unique, featuring a one-piece hard-top panel that can be easily removed and completely stored in the trunk, that converts from a full hard-top, to a targa-top, to a full convertible, all at the flip of a switch. De Tomaso also designed an incredibly safety-centric, galvanized steel chassis with four times the torsional rigidity of comparable open-top coupes; in conjunction with a double wishbone, front and rear coil suspension that affords the driver a great feel for the road.
This interior of top-grade, hand-crafted leather is in “Tobacco ” color, which still smells showroom fresh and has aged extremely well; and boasts a full Nakamichi sound system and 6-disc CD changer. The “super-integrated” interior design includes the instrument panel and cluster, the center console, 6-way power adjusted driver seat, full leather door panels, AC-climate control, and an advanced powertrain control system. The original design team was quoted as saying, “there was nothing added as an afterthought; creating an attractive but very functional and ergonomically-friendly interior design”.
This particular Mangusta placed in two car shows during 2002 and 2003 by the original owner, but has been driven almost daily by both the original and current owner as a fun, drive-to-work kind of car (not one that was stored for years as many of the early Mangusta’s were), and currently has approximately 58,000 original miles.
If you like owning and driving a truly unique car with raw performance and one-of-a-kind styling that gets people’s attention, this is the car for you.
